The Book Blogger Insider Tag

the-book-blogger-insider-tag

Hello, everyone, and hope you’re all having a terrific weekend! It’s Reg again, bringing you a tag post because I’m just too lazy to read or write anything more substantial at the moment. I mean, we’ve all had those days (or weeks, or months), hey? 😉

A huge thank you to Meghan @ Meghan’s Whimsical Explorations & Reviews for this tag — it was fun (and super easy!) to do. 💕

Rules

1) Where do you typically write your blog posts?

There are three places where blog writing usually takes place for me:

  • In my living room, either on my couch or study desk, both in front of the TV,
  • In my bedroom, usually on my bed, and
  • At my desk at the office. #rebel 🙈

2) How long does it generally take you to write a book review?

It depends on the book! Just writing — excluding editing, formatting, and graphics — probably takes at least fifteen minutes* for each book, generally. The more I have to say about the book (i.e. the more I like it or dislike it), the quicker the process is.

* I’ve never timed myself nor paid any attention to the clock during this so this is a very, very loose guesstimate at best.

3) When did you start your book blog?

September 2015. Yep, it’s been over a year and I’m still here. 😂

4) What is the worst thing about having a book blog in your opinion?

I’m not sure if this is really a ‘worst’ thing since I’m not quite sure yet how I feel about it, but book blogging takes so much of my time.

I know this is entirely voluntary (i.e. I can pull back at any moment, and I have, and I am), but I can’t help but to feel like I am neglecting my other hobbies at times. Like I’m just so, so into it that I’m obsessed with it and don’t want to make time for anything else even though that something else could be potentially more productive or fulfilling. 🙃

5) What is the best thing about having a book blog in your opinion?

Every time I answered this question, I’ve always said the community, and while that still holds 100% true, I’m going to get a bit personal here and tell you that the best thing about having a book blog is that it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

I’m the kind of person who needs to have some sort of an ongoing project to feel like a worthy, productive human being (this is not all good, I know), and having my own little corner of the internet has really helped with that. 🙏

6) What blog post have you had the most fun writing so far?

I’ve probably had the most fun writing one of my more ‘successful’ TTTs: Top Ten Thoughts Every Blogger Has Had At Least Once. It was also super satisfying and validating to read through the comments that people have left — it’s nice to know we’re not alone in this crazy journey we call blogging. 💕

7) What is your favourite type of blog post to write?

I really enjoyed writing my blogging posts, but man, they can actually be quite hard to write sometimes! Still, they generally get quite a bit of attention and it’s always nice to hear what other people think about various blogging-related topics. 😊

8) When do you typically write?

I don’t really have a set time to write, but I find myself writing most often when I’m at home in the evenings or during downtime at work. There’s really no typical hour… or even day, or even week, because sometimes I do go through weeks without writing anything.

9) Do you review every book you read?

I don’t! I think I used to, but I got lazy. 😅

I was blind but now I see bradley cooper gif
10) How do you write your book reviews? With a cup of coffee or tea? With Netflix? Cuddled with your fur baby?

Usually with my laptop on my lap, on my living room couch! At any given reviewing time, there’s a 50% chance that I have my TV running in the background and a 80% chance that I have a hot drink on the coffee table next to me.

11) When do you write your book reviews? Right after finishing the book? Two weeks after finishing the book?

This depends on two main factors: how I feel about the book and how productive I am in real life in that given moment. A book that I don’t really feel much for (i.e. maybe an average 3-star rating) usually takes a bit longer for me to review, especially when I’m really busy.

I think the longest I’ve gone is maybe a month or so after finishing a book — more than that and I usually just decide not to review it at all. 🤷‍♀️

12) How often do you post?

When I first started, I used to post 4-6 times a week! Now real life is kicking me in the butt so I hover around the 2-4 mark. Theoretically I could do more since I have quite a few posts drafted up, but I’d like to be able to reply to comments and blog-hop too so I gotta make time for that. ✨

  1. Great tag! I enjoyed reading your answers. 😀
I can definitely relate to the ‘how often do you post’ question. Earlier, it used to be so convenient to post new stuff every now and then, but now it’s so hard to find time for blogging. 😦

  2. I was looking for a blogging tag! Thanks for the nomination! xxx
OMG Blogging is just so time-consuming that it even eats away my reading time! I need to find the right balance to visit blogs, write my posts, read, and stay sane, hahaha

  3. I really enjoyed reading your answer Reg! I don’t review all the books I read too, I mean I do review all of them on goodreads, but only 1/5 of those reviews made it to my blog each time 😀 It’s hard to write a coherent review, because if the book is so amazing I’ll end up rambling, if it’s too mediocre I’ll have nothing to say, and if it’s so bad I’ll end up ranting xD

    • Thanks so much, Tasya! I don’t even review all of them on Goodreads, haha – just a star rating is enough for me, and even then sometimes I forget. But oh well… it’s really not such a big deal to miss these things. 😂

And I can relate so bad. It’s definitely not always easy!

  4. Blogging takes up SO much time! I’m amazed that some people post everyday. I mean it’s really fun and I love it but I also need to take occasional breaks from blogging 🙂

  5. I love your answers, and thank you for the tag! I’m exactly the same, writing on my couch all of my blog posts with the tv probably turned on haha. Also, I used to feel the need to review every book I read, but now I’m trying to review the ones I feel like deserve to be talked about more, and also the ones I have loads of things to say about. Blogging takes so much time already, ahah. Also, I completely agree about what you said on accomplishment – it’s something I feel, too!

    • No worries, Marie! I hope that you enjoy doing this tag if/when you get to it.

And yeees, exactly. I also have such a huge backlog of reviews to be published that I haven’t yet posted simply because I don’t have the time to work through the comments, and that’s a whole other issue altogether, haha. I’m glad you feel a sense of accomplishment as well – it’s definitely fulfilling that way. 💕

  6. It usually takes me 30 minutes to write a review (not counting the editing process). I’m your opposite, actually: the more I have to say, the harder it gets to write :/

    • 30 minutes sounds about right – I know I said 15 on my post, but to be honest that’s probably the soonest I can finish a book review, haha.

And oh no! Does writing out all your points in dot-point form help? That’s what I usually do, and then I just restructure the entire thing after I’m done.

  7. Great answers for this tag Reg, I loved reading more about the blogger behind She Latitude! 😀
I actually tend to write blog posts anywhere, literally anywhere. Most time I’m somewhere in my room but I’ve been writing in the living room and kitchen, on the train to work, during my lunch break, sometimes even while I should be doing something else.
Timing is something I struggle with sometimes on my blog, it’s all become an intricate balancing act hasn’t it? Also real life has been kicking my ass recently, I’ve still managed to post but I wonder if I may have to cut back on how often I post someday soon.
Anyway great answers. Thanks so much for the tag, I think I maybe have done this one already but if I haven’t I will be sure to add it to my queue! 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Beth! And wow, that’s amazing – do you write on your phone, then (i.e. when you’re on the train)?

And I totally get you re: cutting back. February has been absolutely, absolutely crazy that I just don’t really have the time/space/energy to blog as much as I want to… I haven’t even read anything this month, I don’t think. I hope you find a balance that works better for you – cutting back is always an option when things get too hectic, and real life takes priority always. 💕

Also oops, sorry if you’ve done this before! I should’ve checked first but I thought of you and was like, I MUST KNOW WHAT BETH DOES! (No pressure, though.) 😂

      • That’s all right, and actually most times if I write posts it’s on my iPad, writing and replying to comments is normally on my phone.
I’m trying to get some drafts done while I can so I have some back-up posts so to say for when life does get insane, I think that will help a bit but yeah life can be really hectic at times. I hope things manage to quieten down a bit for you as well soon.
Honestly I can’t remember if I have either, I still haven’t managed to check, but if I haven’t I will add this one onto my tags list for sure! 😀

        • That’s amazing! My fingers get super tired typing on my phone so I usually just use that to browse and reply to shorter comments. 😛

Thanks, Beth. I have faith that in about a month or so things will have settled down, but until then there’s just a lot of things that need to be taken care of as I’m moving overseas. Good luck with those drafts! ❤

          • Most time I use it to browse but every so often if I’ve finished whatever book I’m reading it saves some time in an evening to reply to my comments on the train home.
That’s all right, well in that case I’ll keep my fingers crossed that things settle down for you soon.
            Thanks Reg! 😀 ❤

    • I can relate! It took me foreeever to feel good about posting more rarely but it was getting really hard to keep track of all the comments and to also blog-hop, something’s gotta give, haha. I hope you find a balance that works for you, and no worries. 💗

  8. Yay! You did the tag! I loved reading your answers! haha you write your blog posts at work, I read them at work! 😛 I think the only way I can keep up with everyone’s posts is by reading them at work when I have half an hour (sometimes more) to spare! 😛
I’m also with you that my blog gives me a sense of accomplishment. I feel like I’m doing something (that I actually like) with my life, and coming up with new blog ideas and posts always makes me happy.

  9. Ugh, yes, all the time it takes to blog. 🙈 Before I started, I thought it’d be easy, and now it takes me a good hour to type up posts, do graphics, find pictures, etc. But, yep, the community is definitely why I keep doing it. It’s so much fun talking to other people who understand my love of books. ❤

Oh God, when I had Goodreads, I pretty much wrote a review for every book I read. Absolute torture. I think reviewing is much easier now at the moment, and I’ve actually felt like I’m improving on my reviews. But, who knows how I’ll feel next month. 😂

    • For sure! I mean, I don’t really think of blogging as “really hard work”, but I do put effort into it and it is… er, fun work. 😛

Are you not on Goodreads anymore, then? What was the reasoning behind that? I ask bc Goodreads is like a lifesaver to me. 😂

      • It is fun work! I work harder in my blog than anything really, and that’s just because I love it so much! If I told my parents how far ahead I am in posts, they’d probably look at me like I’m crazy since I procrastinate heavily on my schoolwork. 😂

No, I’m not! I used to sort of “professionally review” there, if that makes sense? It was like my blog, but I was stressed out from school and I felt like I was getting nothing out of it, so I quit. I’m actually back on now, since I gave one with my blog, but it’s a hot mess. 😝

        Like

        • That makes me curious – how far ahead are you in posts? 😛

Haha, I see. Yeah, that’s totally fair – if something gives you more stress than it gives you, er, benefits, I suppose it’s a good call to drop it and move on to something else. I hope this blog doesn’t stress you out too much. ❤

          • I’m three posts away from finishing up with all my planned blog posts for April. 😂

And, no, it definitely doesn’t! Probably because I’m so far ahead that I don’t feel like I’m rushing anything out, so that’s good! 😄

            Like

            • APRIL! That’s crazy! (And by that I mean crazy awesome, go you!). I’ve got sporadically drafted posts all the way until July (I have a review for an ARC due to be published then) but for the most part I still need to do my weekly/monthly posts, haha.

  10. I have to admit I’m a little jealous that it takes you so little time to write reviews. Sometimes it takes me hours. Or days. I do these little bullet point reviews straight when I finish a book but actually focusing and putting it all into words takes me so long. Although, I think that has more to do with my own inability to focus at times. 🙈
And I am completely with you on blogging being so time consuming! I’ve really struggled with finding that perfect balance between reading, blog hopping, replying to comments, and writing my own posts (and still do).
Great answers for this, Reg! I really enjoyed reading them. 😊💕

    • I might have actually underestimated the amount of time! 15 minutes is probably the very, very short end – like I said, I didn’t really measure it or anything and it’s been a while (think a whole month++) since I wrote a review. But yeah, the focus thing… some days it’s definitely easier for me than others. 😛

I get you! Right now life is KILLING ME so everything else is being neglected and I’m only relying on previously drafted posts, haha. I guess it’s also about letting go of control, though – it’s OK to not do everything all at once, and it’s OK to not be on top of things. 😛

This is exactly how I feel. I am a stay at home Mom, so I don’t necessarily get that sense of accomplishment that I did when I was working. Blogging has been this sense of accomplishment for me.

At the moment real life is keeping me from reading and blogging Argh!!!! and smart me went and booked myself on blog tours so I must get to reading.

    • Yay for similar answers! And I totally get it – real life’s crazy busy for me too at the moment… I don’t know how I’d hold well with blog tours. Thankfully I’ve been pretty good at not requesting review copies, despite the temptation. Good luck! 😛
